About the Foundation

The Foundation's estate, viewed from the garden.

In the aftermath of World War II, Baron Kurd von Hardt (1889–1958), having no heir, decided to invest his fortune in an enterprise that would bring Europeans together through the study of their shared heritage: classical culture. He created a library specialized in classical philology, ancient history, ancient philosophy, religion, and mythology, as well as epigraphy. The project took the form of a foundation, which was established in 1949.
